Midtown’s abuse allegations demand answers

The Carr headline brings renewed attention to Midtown. Keep the reported abuse, survivors’ accounts, and Carr’s denial in view.

Reporting discussed: Tom Boggioni, Raw Story · September 22, 2026, covering the Guardian’s Midtown investigation.

A powerful official’s connection to Midtown has brought renewed attention to allegations that deserve a hearing in their own right. Raw Story reports that FCC chairman Brendan Carr spent years in the Washington-area AA offshoot as a teenager and young adult. The central issue for this site is the conduct former members describe: control over their lives and alleged sexual exploitation of young people seeking sobriety.

The reporting does not identify Carr as a perpetrator. Former members quoted in the coverage describe him as protective, and some describe him as a victim of the group’s manipulation. An FCC spokesperson denied both abusive conduct by Carr and knowledge of the alleged abuse. Those statements belong prominently in the record.

The allegations that demand attention

According to Raw Story’s account of the Guardian investigation, former members said Midtown leader Michael Quinones controlled where people lived, worked, and attended school. They alleged that teenage girls and young women faced pressure to enter sexual relationships with older male members. Quinones died in 2007.

These are allegations reported by journalists, not findings made by this website. Their seriousness calls for careful scrutiny of the accounts and supporting evidence. A promise of sobriety must never place a young person beyond the protection of ordinary boundaries.

The reported combination of authority over housing, education, work, and intimate relationships raises an urgent question about power: how freely can someone refuse a demand when the same community shapes so much of their life? That question deserves an answer independent of any member’s later prominence.

Keep Carr’s reported role clear

Raw Story reports that Carr joined in 1996 at about 17 and appears to have remained involved for roughly nine years, including during law school. The article cites a recorded Midtown speech from 2005 as part of that timeline.

Former members’ descriptions of Carr must not be erased to create a more sensational story. The coverage includes accounts of him helping younger members. The FCC’s response denies wrongdoing and knowledge of the alleged conduct. Membership alone is not evidence that a person committed, enabled, or knew about abuse.

This article concerns historical allegations. It does not establish conditions at any meeting today.

Put the people describing harm at the center

Our position is direct: a recovery group should be answerable for the demands it places on people. No leader should control another person’s sexual choices, punish questions, or make access to support depend on obedience.

The people describing harm deserve more than a brief place in a political news cycle. Read their accounts. Preserve the original reporting. Ask specific questions about the conduct alleged and distinguish the evidence from speculation.
