Belonging must never demand obedience

Obedience, pressure over prescribed medication, and the loss of friendships after leaving: these are the practices @alabamaamanda describes in her October 28, 2024 Facebook account of seven years in Midtown. Those allegations deserve direct scrutiny.

The price she says came with belonging

She recalls an initial sense of belonging and improvements in her life. She also says obedience to sponsors and senior members was expected, with shunning or exclusion as possible consequences of refusing. Her account describes restrictions on outside meetings and professional care, including pressure to discard prescribed medication.

She describes losing friendships when she left and continuing difficulty with trust and decision-making. Alongside that harm, she expresses gratitude for finding sobriety again and having further chances to rebuild her life.

Gratitude does not cancel an account of harm

A person can value their sobriety and reject the demands a group placed on them. Reports of coercion deserve an answer on their own terms. Pointing to friendship or progress does not answer an allegation that someone was punished for thinking independently.

Recovery communities should defend a member’s freedom to question a sponsor, maintain outside relationships, and make decisions about care with qualified professionals. Belonging must never depend on surrendering those choices.
